OK if that is the case I would think it is in the setup of either the mail client or the machine itself. In the mail client what happens of you give it the IP of the SMTP server vs the name? If this works look at DNS config on that machine. If it doesn't I would look at network issues. Since you can get there from telnet I would thing this would work.
