Aha. That's a major clue.
Do you have AV software running in the background, that constantly scans
all files that are updated on the server (an "on-access" scanner)? If so,
you should try disabling that and see if the problem goes away.
The next step would be to check the IMail log files to see if it is
reporting what the problem is. My only other guess would be a timeout of
some sort, if the E-mail being sent was too large. But if that were the
case, the mail client shouldn't report a "didn't answer" message (as the
mail client would be sending data to the mail server).
