We have heard from two people who have experienced similar symptoms (slow
SMTP connections on a server that is more than powerful enough for the load
it is handling).
It seems in both cases that the problem was due to a combination of running
F-Prot and some unknown variable that causes 16-bit processes to cause huge
delays on the server. One of these customers was also running a seemingly
identical setup on another server without any problems, which makes me
suspect some obscure OS setting involving the way that 16-bit processes are
run (I've seen some NT setups slow to a crawl while starting EDIT at the
command line).
To confirm whether or not this is the case, you can try temporarily using a
different AV program. We have heard that F-Prot is going to be releasing
(has released?) a 32-bit command line scanner, which should eliminate this
problem on servers that are experiencing it.
