Well Chet I'll try to give it a shot..

I believe the Q810833i.exe patch was to fix a hole 'buffer over run' exploit
with the RPC locator service. The only thing I can remember is that windows
xp, 2k, or nt will not run good at all if the RPC service is disabled. I've
tried setting our RPC service to manual and it started every time upon
reboot so I've finally changed the RPC service setting to Automatic. I've
Also set the locator service to manual and it's called when ever windows
needs it or perhaps a 3rd party app needs it for internal name resolution.
I've also blocked the netbios ports at our border router as to prohibit any
buffer overruns to the locator anyway. We don't allow netbios calls outside
our network.. and nobody should, IMHO, either.

When you manually stop and restart the smtp service in imail does it chunk
out email? Do you have any 'higher than normal' processor utilization on
processes/appilcations during the void of not sending email?
