Can someone explain the concept of a Mail gateway.

I currently have over 5000 web email users on one box and am looking for ways to fine tune the server and make it more reliable and faster.
check the list archives for tuning or "defrag" or "mailbox size" or "partition" for internal optimizations.
An MX gateway like IMGate allows you to offload a lot of work from Imail to an external helper machine.
