Could it possibly be that the info within the primary MX record might be incorrect and the secondary MX correct? I would suspect that once all MX records have been tried, and have subsequently failed, then it would be safe to assume that there email server is down. I have tried to send email to a 'broken' exchange 5.5 email server such as [EMAIL PROTECTED] and it fails with IMail.
