Editing the registry is not really all that big of a deal despite all the warnings as long as you know what you are doing and make backups first.
run regedt32 and drill down to Local_Machine\software\microsoft\windows\run\* For startup programs back up the Run key before edits. Remove only run values and only for programs that you know. If you don't know what an auto-start program does do a search for it in explorer. The directory should give you more clues.
