Editing the registry is not really all that big of a deal despite all the
warnings as long as you know what you are doing and make backups first.

run regedt32 and drill down to
Local_Machine\software\microsoft\windows\run\*

For startup programs back up the Run key before edits. Remove only run
values and only for programs that you know. If you don't know what an
auto-start program does do a search for it in explorer. The directory should
give you more clues.

Where in the NT registry is "startup" of programs done that are
services, not from the regular startup menu?

I see a program starting up when I run my server but it is not in the
regular startup menu.
