I have to disagree with you. AOL has made a policy choice, and you have
chosen an ISP that won't let you change your rDNS. You should complain to
your ISP, and not to AOL.

Again, when you are dealing with a multi-million dollar corporation that you are lucky to have providing Internet access, it isn't always possible to get them to do things they aren't required to the RFCs to do.

Until a few days ago, the contents of the reverse DNS entry were not important. Why should someone have to switch Internet providers (if that is even possible!) all of a sudden, when their Internet provider isn't even doing anything wrong?

When I picked an ISP (www.speakeasy.net) I made
sure they let me modify rDNS.

If they were the only ISP that serviced your area, would you have picked them? <G>

Maybe they are forcing you to change your rDNS but if you want to come
in my house you have to take your shoes off.

That is too ironic. :) The flaw with your example is the exact issue at hand!

The flaw with your example is that you can (and should) have complete control over who comes into your house, and they can (and should!) have complete control over whether or not they take off their shoes.

But, in many cases, individuals do not have control over whether or not their mailserver will block legitimate E-mail, and many companies/organizations don't have the ability to have a vanity reverse DNS entry.

So in this case, it's more like a law saying that you can't go into any house in your town, unless you are wearing a $500 pair of shoes.
