Question.. What are the reasons Imail would lock it as such? I haven't been able to find a explanation of a file type beginning with a "_":
IMail locks the spool files when they need to be locked (such as when it is delivering an E-mail).
Start with ~ - processing file. If the next three characters are NEX, then it is being processed by Web Messaging or by imail1.exe.
This one should be "Start with _ ..." (it's the extension that starts with "~").
Also while the files starting with "D" specify email bodies, and should have corresponding, or matching files prefixed by "Q", I'm finding that files such as "Dfff678d20132a174.SMD" that are in the old que directory, there is no correspoinding "Qfff678d20132a174.SMD" file.
That's called an orphan. It indicates an E-mail that double-bounced (IMail couldn't deliver it, and it couldn't deliver a bounce message), so IMail keeps the D*.SMD file just to make sure that no E-mail ever gets lost.
Would moving "Dfff678d20132a174.SMD" into the current spool directory accomplish
anything, or just mess up the queue?
If the D*.SMD file has no matching Q*.SMD file, moving it into the spool directory won't do anything -- it will just sit there if there is no Q*.SMD file. To deliver it, you would need to hand-create a Q*.SMD file (which isn't normally recommended).
