my internal DNS server IP
results=
hits my internal dns server
it returns the MX pref of 10, mail exchanger = mail.mydomain.com
mail.mydomain.com internet address = "my EXTERNAL IP for my mx record"

So your internal DNS is not serving the Imail domain with internal IPs?

I would drop the internal DNS now. it's not a problem you can't fix.

Use hosts file on both machines to resolve the other machine and continue to see why exchange going to the internal IP of IMail has TCP problems. Once you get that fixed, you can go back and play with internal DNS (but I don't know why you would bother).
