Thanks Dan Both servers have their primary DNS set to the internal dns server. No secondary is set on either server since the inernal dns does forwarding to the ISP's server if external resolution is needed.
While the zones were setup I was able to do just that. nslookup, tracert resolved the internal IP's wihtout fail. Each server could ping and telnet to the other by IP, domain.com and mail.domain.com The A and MX records are right for internal use. They are identical to external except the IP's. Gate Host is blank in Imail administrator. The Firewall log for ISA indicates no blocking of traffic from Exch TO Imail...just FYI. I don't get it. The only diffirences between the HOSTS and the zones I tested was the "domain.com". Another Imail poster explained that the HOSTS file would have to have the "mail.domain.com" and "domain.com" entries. However, in the dns zone I know of know way to enter the "domain.com" if it doesn't simply get that fomr the zone name itself (domain.com.dns). If you set up the internal DNS with correct A and MX records, set the mail servers to use the internal DNS, and don't have Exchange or Imail set up to use a gateway to deliver the mail for them then it simply has to work. If I were doing this I'd set up the internal DNS server and set my workstation to use it. Then I'd use dig or nslookup or ping and telnet to query it and make sure the MX and A records resolve to the internal IPs and that I connect to the proper servers. Then I'd change one mail server at a time and make sure they can resolve the IPs using ping and telnet.
