There  was  no  need to jump through hoops to fix his issue. He simply
needed  to follow the manual, which he did on his own well before your
reply.

Yes,  you  did.  However,  your  claim  that  "ODBC  is a real pain to
configure   if   the   database   is  not  on  the  same  machine"  is
incorrect--IMail  does  not  care  one  whit whether the DSN points to
(local)   or  to  a  dedicated  server,  except  for  the  performance
overhead--and the direction to install SQL on the mailserver, far from
a  "simple setup," means installing a resource-hungry application on a
production  box, with reboots, patching and all that. (If you meant to
imply  that  configuring  ODBC  connections is a "real pain" no matter
what   the   application,  I  disagree  even  more  strongly,  as  the
time-tested  ODBC  protocol  is  very  predictable  and overwhelmingly
well-regarded.)

Overall,  I  believe  your  advice was well-intentioned but misguided;
Lim's  easy  results corroborate that conclusion. I stand by my desire
to eliminate time-consuming and destabilizing work until necessary.
