As I've seen this is one posibility. But it's also the case when the Imail server "only means" that the remote mailserver disconnected after not receiving the following TCP-packet within around 7 seconds.
The 10054 error should only occur when Windows reports to IMail that the connection was terminated by the remote end (which should only happen if it Windows receives a packet from that server saying that it is disconnecting).
The SMTP-server (or also client) on the other side has never "disconnected" and will run in a timeout because Imail has already dropped the connection even if the "missing" packet arrives after the (Imail hardcoded???) timeout.
It's not an IMail timeout. According to Microsoft, it should only occur if the remote end of the connection issues a "hard or abortative close."
I've noted that immediatly after I can see the first ping delays over 7000 milliseconds the Imail-Service drops the connection and writes this damn 10054 in the logfile.
It may be that the client side is indeed issuing the close command, because it is overwhelmed.
Have you tried running a packet sniffer on the server when doing this, to prove or disprove whether or not the remote side is closing the connection?
