We have Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition on our network, and I was wondering if there's a way to allow it to work with Imail instead of purchasing the Anti-Virus add-on (that would essentially cost us what we already paid for the corporate licensing, doubling our total cost for anti-virus).
If you want E-mail scanned, your only realistic option is to purchase a mailserver AV program -- whether it be one of the 2 that integrate with IMail (Declude Virus and IMail AntiVirus), or a non-integrated program (such as Symantec's NAVIEG).
A mailserver virus scanner requires 3 components: [1] An AV program, [2] A mailserver, and [3] The "glue" that puts it all together (decoding attachments, hooking into the AV program and mailserver, detecting vulnerabilities, sending notifications, etc.). Most people already have #1 and #2 (which is why our Declude Virus is so popular -- you don't have to re-purchase something that you already have). However, AV companies know that companies are often willing to spend $10,000s to scan E-mail, so they don't let their standard desktop program scan E-mail. As a result, you need to buy a product designed to scan E-mail.
A few people try oddball approaches, such creating their own filters when new viruses are released, or trying to get a desktop scanner to scan E-mails (which usually results in super high CPU usage, with either no viruses getting caught, or legitimate E-mail deleted from .mbx files that have a virus in them). Those approaches may be acceptable for people who want to reduce viruses, without the goal of eliminating them, and who have resources to test them.
