Len has been blasting my firewall for years now, I'm expecting to hear his 2cents any minute :)
The Imail envelope recipient is accepted or rejected, no matter whether the sending MTA client comes through a firewall proxy or is a backup MX relay.
And envel recip addr resolution/decision "should" come before any whitelisting. (ie, whitelisting an IP doesn't mean IMail must accept unknown recipients from the whitelisted MTA)
