There is absolutely no reason for your server (I am speaking of the SMTPD service) to accept mail for unknown users unless you have deliberately enabled such a feature with good cause. This "all of a sudden" quirk in turn creates several spam-related issues and should be tracked down.
I haven't deliberately done anything to enable this, however, I believe that I have misrepresnted my setup, not intentionally though. I mentioned I had been posting to another list concerning this issue and it was brought to my attention that a gateway would cause this behavior. In my mind, that meant a server, set up as an IMAIL gateway, however, the smtp proxy on my firewall *is* acting as a gateway of sorts, as it intercepts all incoming and outgoing mail and sends it on it's way. Except, I do think I mentioned the proxy on this list. Have you tried testing this via Telnet from an internal address (circumventing your firewall's surely somewhat-broken SMTP filter)? Can you duplicate the same behavior with a dummy domain (set up a new one just for testing)? Testing via telnet is a good idea and I will surely do this, however I would bet the results are that IMAIL acts the way it's supposed to without the interference of the firewall's proxy. Len has been blasting my firewall for years now, I'm expecting to hear his 2cents any minute :) Sharyn We are the worldwide producer and marketer of the award winning Cruzan Single Barrel Rum, judged "Best in the World" at the annual San Francisco Wine and Spirits Championships.
