If so... Why does Imail default to machine.domain.com on installation???
Because it really should be both mail.example.com and example.com. IMail uses that field for both the return address (which should be example.com) and for the URL for web messaging (which should be mail.example.com). If you don't use web messaging, example.com is fine.
