Forgive me if I am asking something that in some way has been answered in archives; I
have searched using my particular query and come up empty handed...
If I have a list of IP addresses of known spammers, what's the best way to prevent
them from sending mail to my server -- WITHOUT using a third-party product?
Can/Should I:
1. Use a rules-based software packet filter like pktfilter, and update the rules.txt
file for that service on a regular basis with the IPs that I collect?, or
2. Should I use the grant/deny access feature of the SMTP security tab, adding in IPs
that I wish to deny connection to my mail server to send their crap our way?
Lastly, aside from using a third-party product, is there any way to TELL the sending
server they've been blocked, so it appears in their log files (such as "delivery
unsuccessful, your server is blacklisted").
I'm leaning towards pktFilter, because it has a simple rules.txt file I can add "block
in {ipaddress}
etc., and it's therefore "scriptable" to some extent, allowing me to automate. But
I'm not familiar enough with the program to know how efficient it is, and it probably
won't yield the results in the sender's SMTP logs that I am looking for either...
it'll just deny a port 25 connection.
Anybody wanna touch this? I'll understand if you don't! ;)
