If I have a list of IP addresses of known spammers, what's the best way to prevent them from sending mail to my server -- WITHOUT using a third-party product?

Typically when someone wants to block an IP, I recommend that they use the IMail SMTP Control Access file. In most cases, it handles the situation better than third party products, as it prevents the E-mail from even being received. Except in cases where you *want* the E-mail (for example, you're planning to sue the spammer), the Control Access file is usually the best option.

1. Use a rules-based software packet filter like pktfilter, and update the rules.txt file for that service on a regular basis with the IPs that I collect?, or

2. Should I use the grant/deny access feature of the SMTP security tab, adding in IPs that I wish to deny connection to my mail server to send their crap our way?

Blocking the IP with a software firewall probably won't be any better than blocking it with IMail, so I would go with #2.

Lastly, aside from using a third-party product, is there any way to TELL the sending server they've been blocked, so it appears in their log files (such as "delivery unsuccessful, your server is blacklisted").

Not that I am aware of. That will happen with the Kill List (E-mail addresses that are blocked), but I'm not aware of any way (even with third-party products!) to let them know that their IP is blocked.
