All I am saying is once "disable SMTP VRFY" was unchecked, it worked.

Either it was SMTP VRFY or they made a change to their DNS configuration.

The failure occurred multiple times over multiple days, so I doubt it was a DNS 
problem (on our end
anyway).

Problem solved.
