I have one DNS listed in my SMTP settings. If I do an nslookup  with
type=MX on that DNS for mindspring.com it returns all of their MX
records. Why would Imail go to the A record?

It's on your end, unfortunately.  IMail is incorrectly connecting to the
A 
record, rather than the MX record.  This was common in older 7.X and
below 
versions of IMail, but is very rare on IMail v8.  If you have more than
one 
DNS server listed in your IMail SMTP settings, you should remove an
extra 
ones, and only leave in the most reliable one.
