It sounds to me like you never set up your filters properly. There should be no reason that you "Lose" an e-mail due to filters. If you are deleting e-mail based on a single test(s), then no system in the world will protect you from yourself. I'm not being hard on you, it's true.
Absolutely! In our settings the only time a piece of email gets deleted is if it fails two (2) DNSBL tests. All other email gets directed to a "spam" account that we check at least four times per day (downloaded with Eudora). That mail then gets sorted by "Subject". Valid email (False Positives) stick out from all the crap like it had a flashing lights.
Also, I 100% agree with you on keeping users informed. I have sent out 9 messages to our users since 5/13/2003 (when we turned on the Anti-Spam settings) that have explained in detail what is being done and how we are trying to minimize issues with False Positives.
The feed back from our users has been fantastic (concerning both our fight against spam and for keeping them in the loop as to what we are doing)! Getting thank you notes and other letters of appreciation from our users sure helps offset the hours of work that have been put in to arrive at our current settings. A little communication to them and thank you's from them go a long way.
Plus, it is YOUR job to make sure that YOUR clients fully understand the Spam policies that you have in place. If their e-mail then gets trapped, then they know where to find it. No harm done.
