They're right, unfortunately, fighting spam is an ongoing job. I used to think like you but finally saw the light.
I now spend much too much time keeping up with the spammers and their tricks but it's just what I have to do.
ALL my clients have been warned about email.
First, there are NO guarantees that any email they send will actually make it to the person they are sending it to.
Second, if they rely on emails only for communications then they're doomed to have failures.
If your customers do not understand these principals then there is nothing you can do for them.
