It shouldn't do, but could you test by setting up one email client? You could even set it up as an IMAP account, that way you won't lose anything from your Webmail.
Is it only files from a particular source? (ie the same sender) Or is it all Microsoft Word attachments? As I said earlier, but substitute a Word doc instead...I'd send a few tests to an external address, and then forward it back. Make sure it's fine when it gets to the external account, and then if it is still fine when it comes back. If so, then that almost rules out the problem being with your setup. It would point to the files themselves being malformed or something.
