You'd be surprised how many times I've heard people say that -- and then say things like "I only spend 10-15 hours a week updating the spam filters". Quick math shows that in the U.S., that would cost a typical company about $10,000/year. Of course, your situation may differ.
And while I would love to by Declude I don't have that spare $9,100.00 (in-shop billing rate of $70/hr x 2.5 hours/week x 52 weeks) sitting around so I spend the time.
Actually, the cash you would need to come up with is the price of the program, not the cost of your time. So in this case, over a year, you could be saving $8,000+ (assuming that you would be making $70/hr profit during time you now spend on spam, but more likely it is quite a bit less than that, but is at a bare minimum your company pays you for those 2.5 hours/week).
So if you don't have $895 (or $495, or $249, or some other amount, depending on what anti-spam software you purchase) sitting around, put it on a credit card, and your company will be saving the cost of over 10 man-hours per months. If your productivity of those extra 10 man-hours isn't enough to justify paying off the credit card, well, let's not go there. <G>
Again, I'm not trying to sell our product (the argument works in favor of the least expensive options, if they can replace those man-hours), just trying to explain that spending $1,000s a year to avoid spending $895 (or less) just isn't an economically sound business decision. While it is often hard to get the boss to shell out more money, if you explain how he will save money, he should love the idea.
Now if Ipswitch would be more careful about the domains they blacklist we could all work less hours fixing that issue.
That was something that I found surprising -- I wasn't expecting Ipswitch to offer a service (bi-weekly data updates) along with the anti-spam software. Even we do not do that. I can only imagine how much work it is for them to go through thousands of URLs and try to weed out the good ones that happen to appear in spam.
