The best way to avoid disruption is to run both mail servers in parallel for
a day or two while DNS is changing, and have your users set up the mail
clients to pull from both servers during that time. That way as DNS servers
around the world pick up your new info at various times, they will always be
able to deliver the mail, and your users will always be able to pull it.
After a couple of days you should be safe to drop the old server and have
your users drop the old email account from their mail client (but make sure
your users have pulled all of the mail off before you do).

Another way to handle this is to set up the domains on the new mail server
and change the domains on the old server to store and forward to the new
one. Then you only have to wait to let the spool clear out on the old
server. You still have to maintain separate MX records and mail hostnames
during the switchover, but you can have all of your users switch their
existing account instead of setting up a new one and dropping the old one
after a couple of days.

Hope this helps,

Darin.

Subject: [IMail Forum] Moving Domain to virtual domain on a different
machine

I want to be able to move the main domain on one Imail server to become
a virtual domain on another.

I am planning on following the instructions on
http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-20000510-DM02.htm, but am wondering
if there is anything else to watch out for.

I will be moving about a dozen domains from one server to another and
will also be changing the DNS servers. I would also appreciate any
pointers on the best approach for swapping over the DNS info in order
to minimise mail disruption.

Cheers,
