Using Veritas I have the job email both the client and ourselves so that we can see that the jobs are running and can call the client to schedule a visit if they are not.
We got called in to help a client of another company a few weeks ago that was using a Snap drive for the type of backup you are describing. His Quickbooks file had been damaged and the work they were doing on the file to try and "repair" it caused all the backup copies on their snap drive to also be damaged. I was able to use R-Studio to recover an older "deleted" copy of a Quickbooks created backup he had made of his data back in April and he then had to spend the next two weeks trying to recreate the rest of his books. He know looks at the $1,500 cost to put in a "real" backup solution as being very cheap insurance.

I started using paragon.ag drive copy for imaging. Works well. Also, see http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ for a cd boot disk to restore the images. These two are a perfect combination. I cloned about 14 workstations Saturday in about 2 hours.
