no, because what is in "the middle" is probably weaker than Imail, which is at the top, the reason it's been the market leader for Windows integrated mail software for years.

That WAS certainly the case. However I think Ipswitch got too complacent and the competition was hungry. Looking at the feature set of some of the alternatives certainly looks appealing. Plus, the large ISP I mentioned yesterday that was running IMail moved to SmarterMail because, according to my friend that works tech support for them, the IMail boxes could not keep up with the volume (etc...). He said they at first were using *nix boxes for gateway servers after the switch but they are now even using SmarterMail boxes for that function too.

History is replete with the market leader (Visicalc v. Lotus, Novell/WordPerfect v. MS, Ashton-Tate v. Borland, etc...) in a category being overtaken and surpassed by a new offering that can address changing market conditions.

Ipswitch has priced itself out of it's current market while not offering a robust enough product to succeed in the market that it seems to think it can enter. I'll be watching with great anticipation the columns in the trade rags this coming week that will touch on this issue.

It is interesting to note that not one person on the list has come to the defense of Ipswitch and said they will be following the "crossgrade" path.
