Users and (encrypted) passwords are stored in XML files and there are no Windows users (CALs) required. Also, I have worked with SmarterTools for a while on the entire product line and they are very responsive and polite to work with on issues and  new features.    (The also treat their resellers well too.) It seems to be a good performer. I got a license from Helmtastic.com for less than half of retail (SmarterTools tells me this loophole will be closed at end of year) and it was for a client that only needed the 50domain/250 user version ... a whopping US$99. An unlimited license is something like US$230. For those prices, I can afford to experiment and, if no joy, go to Merak. However so far SM looks good and I think its a safe bet that the 3rd party tools we all love will be supported by it soon.
