It might be reasonable for you to consider changing your spec to use "mbox" terminology for traditional unix style mailbox format. It certainly can be confusing, as other applications (such as SpamAssassin for example) use "mbx" and "mbox" to define these mailbox formats - not "mbx" and "unix". This leads some to use the "mbox" terminology simply out of habit. It is, in my opinion, a little more intuitive anyway and it appears to be possibly more consistent with use of "mbx" "mix" "mh" in other c-client settings. It may also cut down on the inquiries to you along these lines!

The results generated by "set new-folder-format mbox" are rather bizarre and unexpected - IF you don't know what you're looking for (although they make good sense to you and indeed are documented).
