I don't know. The build looks like a build from clean, but the errors
from ranlib are totally bizarre.

According to information from David Morsberger, it ought to work to remove
the setting of MAC_OSX_KLUDGE from the oxp build in the top-level Makefile.
But I don't have a clue as to why it would cause the build errors that you
reported. It's as if either gcc, ar, or ranlib on your system is broken.
