Some clients will have code to handle it. That code will be largely untested, since this hardly if ever happens.

and it should just close the connection with some appropriate text in the untagged BYE?

Since wu-imapd sends BYE on (some) mailbox selects, the clients' ability to handle a surprising BYE will be fairly well tested.
