I don't think so. I do think that people with strong HyperCard histories tend to suffer more than the rank beginner, because there are several differences of style, if you will, that tend to catch HyperCard people out. (I know they caught me) To balance the rough spots, there are people on the list who have put together functional applications in just a few hours with non-trivial functionality. If you describe what you want to do, we might be able to give you some advice on pitfalls to avoid and the general road we see ahead for you. Also bear in mind that the starter kit limitations aren't as limiting as you might think.
