I've been mulling the dilemna of not having enough data about non-Sun
laptops and desktops, and think we need to approach things a bit
differently.

We are pushing everyone to test their systems with the Sun Device
Detection Tool to determine whether or not they can run Solaris.

It seems that we are passing by an excellent opportunity to gather
data for an OpenSolaris HCL.

By uploading the data, we would gain multiple benefits:
------------------------------------------------------------------
 a) Be able to compile a list of machines/motherboards (Make/Model)
that should work. (Based on the fact they have drivers for all the
devices.) We would of course have to add fields for make and model to
the tool.

 b) Be able to gather statistics for unsupported devices, such that
driver development could be prioritized. (We would be finding out what
people are trying to run Solaris on. WE could even submit the data to
a hardware vendor, and show them there is demand for offical
certification.)

c) Compile a list of devices that we have matching drivers for.

d) Get an idea what laptops we should be targeting Indiana at.

e) Have a list of devices that people should stay away from, if they
want to run OpenSolaris.

There is the issue of resources, but I think this would be worthwhile
for Sun and the Community.

Thanks,
Brian
