Okay, out of the box, the image Moinak pointed me at, booting from
cdrom just got me as far as a console login, and gave weird errors
about being unable to start gdm.
Digging into the problem a bit more, the default Xorg settings weren't
right. (the machine is a Dell Optiplex gx110 and has an onboard Intel
i810 frame buffer)
Using my own xorg.conf, and setting DefaultDepth to 24, I was able to
get X to come up. I restarted gdm, got an login session, and got into a
GNOME desktop, hurrah! The desktop is a bit (!) sluggish, but not too
bad all things considered.
Anything else I can help with?
