Thanks for the problem report. In general, feel free to file bugs at

Yes, we'll work on getting this added to the release notes (along with
handling a Linux partition as well).

There is a pkg server, pkg.opensolaris.org, but it currently has the
same contents that's shipped with the Live CD. We're working through a
few last minute issues before we push a bunch more packages - my hope
is by early next week you'll be able to download a lot more content.

Java was left off due to time constrants and concerns about the size of
the Live CD. It's my expectation that it will be available with the
set of packages that become available next week.

Well, we certainly think there are lots of OpenSolaris technologies
that are unique to this open source project that will provide reasons
for people to stick around. Certainly our desktop story hasn't always
been the best but there has been astounding improvements in the past
few years and many if not most of the latest desktop technologies are
available today for OpenSolaris. It's my hope that we'll be seeing
Compiz, KDE and many of the newer desktop tools that are become
standard in a IPS package repository in the not too distant future.
