Hi Dave,

Thanks for the advice, I will remove indiana from the sponsor list in the proposal.

Hardware Driver Detection Tool(HDD) is different from SDDTool(http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/ddtool/). HDD is designed for opensolaris, it runs on opensolaris and report the driver availability and driver status(properly attached or not) on the running system. And alos it has the function to install drivers from IPS. SDDTool is a cross-platform device driver detection tool. It checks the device driver availability through a driver database, not on the running system.

The following is the comparison. HDD vs. SDDTool

Functionality
        Hardware driver detection tool SDDtool
Programming Language
        Python+C+shell
        Java+C
Platform
        Designed for opensolaris
        Solaris,Windows,Linux and Mac OS
Driver detection
Check driver availability on the running system. And report whether driver works properly. Display detailed device and driver information

Check driver availablity for certain version of Solaris through a driver database
Check driver packages availability via IPS Yes
        No
Load driver dynamically from IPS
        Yes
        No
Report system configuration back to HCL
        Yes
        Yes

Proposal for Hardware Driver Detection Project (HDD)

Purpose: The primary purpose of this tool is designed for opensolaris.
It has the following functions:
1. Display device information and device driver information on the system.
2. Check the device driver availability on IPS.
3. Dynamically add device driver from IPS.
4. Report system configurations to the OpenSolaris community.

List of Community Groups Sponsoring the project:
Indiana
Device Driver

Shawn or someone already pointed out the procedural issue that Indiana is a project, not a community, and thus can't sponsor another project, but this project seems identical to a project that already exists:

http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/ddtool/

which is sponsored by both Device Drivers and Installation & Packaging.

Dave
