I completely understand your reasoning. Large nations should
establish their own mirrors to help. This is an issue for my
Australian and UK buddies too. It'll soon be a problem for US
citizens as cable companies continue to not invest in new equipment
for consumers. IDC reports 44% of US citizens are using broadband
internet at home, around 106 million subscribers as of 2008. China in
2007 in total had 200,000 more people online than the US. It's
obvious that China is a big consumer, they're also now the biggest
polluter which we held for 150 years. Regardless of what additionally
has to be paid I'm sure Sun would directly be out less if more people
did this. "The Network is the Sun", "The Sun is hosting a large chunk
of the Internet", "The Computer is the on there yonder, through river
and across the Sun's searing intertubes", or "The Sun is what broke
the camel's internet provider's back" (Metaphoric symbolism stating
the obvious about software distribution these days, Sun seems to be
pushing as much as Adobe in gigabytes directly)

Hi all,
Just FYI, we have setup an IPS server in China. This is a (partial)
mirror of pkg.opensolaris.org. We intend to keep it in sync with
pkg.opensolaris.org.
The major objective of this IPS server is to solve the connectivity
problem in China, especially in the Education and Research Network
(CERNET), where professors and students are charged for their
international traffic.
The URL for the server is http://pkg.opensolaris.org:80/ (for the
public
network in China) and http://pkg-edu.opensolaris.org:80/ (for CERNET).
Best regards,
