Hmm, I'm not sure about that . But anyway - if this is the way to go we
have to use it.
What about the preinstall scripts, and post/pre remove scripts?

Yes, it certainly should be; you can precisely control the privileges
used for executing the service start method, which may well be far
less than required to install software.
Sorry, but using an SMF Service for configuring an application makes
developing of packages more complicated and will lead to lot of new
errors ....
