Maliana Incident: Gov't Sends Task Force To Investigate It

Jakarta, June 30 (ANTARA)- The goverment has sent a task force to
investigate the stoning incident which hurt seven people,
including a UN officer, and damaged the office of the UN Mission
in East Timor (UNAMET) in Maliana subdistrict, Bobonaro district.

The task force, which consists of officers of the Foreign Affairs
Ministry and related ministries, will join the Task Force for the
Direct Ballot in East Timor (P3T) and UNAMET chief, Ian Martin, in
visiting Maliana on Wednesday, Defence Minister/Armed Forces
Chief, Gen. Wiranto, said before attending a limited cabinet
meeting on politics and security, at the Bina Graha presidential
office here Wednesday.

Wiranto said he will also ask the Commission for Reconciliation
and stability (KPS) to have solve the incident fairly so that the
direct ballot could be held on time.

"If the case could not be solved through dialog, it will be settled
by the police," Wiranto said.

He said the incident occured after prointegration supporters took
refugee at the UNAMET office in Maliana to avoid confrontation
with a pro-independence group.

Ask whether the incident is a failure on the part of military,
Wiranto said, "How can you watch over the people of East Timor one
by one? It is not a failure. I don't agree with that".

The participation of the UN civilian police and military liaison
officers from other countries is needed to settle the incident, he
said.
