Policeman not attacked in Timor: Ministry
Source: NZPA Published: Monday July 5 8:40:49 AM

New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said today a report
that a New Zealand policeman had been injured while working for
the United Nations in East Timor was incorrect.

National Radio said this morning that a New Zealand member of
the unarmed United Nations civilian police force was assaulted
by pro-Jakarta militiaman who attacked an aid convoy yesterday.

The report said the New Zealander was among a number of people
hurt, but it did not say how serious his injuries were.

The man was thought to be injured after the civilian police came
under fire as they went to the rescue of members of an aid
convoy in the town of Liquisa, 40 koilometres west of the
capital Dili.

An aid worker was quoted as saying he watched as the unnamed New
Zealander was kicked when an East Timorese tried to hide behind
him.

However a Foreign Affairs spokeswoman said one New Zealand
policeman was in the Liquisa area at the time of the attack, but
the ministry had been assured today by the head of the UN police
contingent that the New Zealander had not been attacked and had
not been harmed at all.

Ten New Zealand police are now in East Timor as part of the
planned 274-member unarmed UN police force for East Timor's
self-determination.

As of last Friday, 104 of the total force had arrived.

Their presence is part of an agreement signed by Indonesia and
Portugal at the United Nations in New York in May.

Under the agreement, Indonesian police are responsible for
security before and during the vote, while the UN police will
act as advisors.

Last week Foreign Affairs Minister Don McKinnon said the safety
of the New Zealand police and all volunteers in East Timor could
not be guaranteed because of the level of violence there.
