E Timor: Territory Must Not Become "Second Somalia", Says Udayana
Mily Chief

Kupang, E Nusa Tenggara, Sept 21 (ANTARA)- A military commander
said here on Tuesday, Indonesia did not wish to see East Timor
become a "second Somalia" where the threat of civil continued to
loom despite the presence of UN troops.

"We do not expect it and therefore the conflicting people of East
Timor have to be willing to reconcile," Major General Adam Damiri,
caommander of the Udayana military command overseeing among others
East Timor, said.

He made the statement in reply to a reporter's question about the
possibility of situation in East Timor turning similiar to that in
Somalia where armed conflicts continued to occur in spite of the
presence of UN troops.

Damiri said situation in East Timor could become normal if
integration and pro independence fighters would talk.

He said the International Forces for East Timor (Interfet) had to
be able to disarm all the fighters in order to stop armed
conflicts. The UN forces have to be able to make both sides make
peace, he added.

Damiri said the most critical situation had passed namely after
the announcement on Sept 4 of the ballot's results in which pro-
autonomy supporters only won 21.5 percent of the vote.
