There are so many clues and deductions, inductions, but still it remained an un- solvable mystery. The Army and the government of the New Order regime are convinced that the PKI are guilty as charged and so is former President Sukarno more or less. According to the New Order version, general Suharto is the hero who crushed the communist coup to save the nation. According to Colonel Latief, Suharto knew in advance about the coup d'etat. But the communist coup d'etat had been a public secret for several months before it exploded. US Ambassador Howard P Jones warned President Sukarno repeatedly about the coming communist coup d'etat. If Jones knew then the whole Embassy may be presumed to be well informed too. The Western diplomatic community knew about it. General S Parman, the head of the Army's SUAD I (Intelligence) knew. As a close friend and next door neighbour he confided to me that his own blood brother, Ir Sakirman, member of the Politbureau, warned him about the coming coup to be excecuted by the Maoists under chairman DN Aidit. Presumably, General Yani and the other slain generals knew as well. General Parman said he is prepared, and presumably are the other generals. Even one of the generals, general Sutoyo was preparing a preemptive strike against the communist headquarters at Kramat raya, using some BPS (Badan Pendukung Sukarnoisme) anti-communists with small arms. What all of us did not know was the unconventional coup d'etat of the PKI: they wouldn't use the conventional technique of the coup. They used Colonel Untung, commander of the Merdeka Palace guards Cakrabiwara to kidnap and massacre the generals and then move the Diponegoro Batallion from Senayan soccer stadium to occupy the Radio and Television Stations and some strategic locations. However, they did it amateurishly: there was no logistic supply, no back up from the cavalry, at the same time the Commandos under Colonel Sarwo Eddhy manag- ed to abort the Airforce's fighters and bombers before they took off early in the morning. As former commander of the Diponegoro Division, general Suharto had no problem to send back home the Central Java batallion without punishment, eventhough they were the only infantry the PKI used in Jakarta to sustain Untung. And that is the end of the story of the abortive communist coup d'etat. Sporadic communist rebellion in the provinces were crushed easily, eventhough colonel Katamso in Solo could not be saved. Paranoia of anti-communism exploded like hell, the head hunt in Central and East Java, in Bali resulted in the massacre of about 800.000 of suspected communists kept secret to the media. The revelation that the British MI-6 were the mastermind of the toppling of Su- karno seemed to have salvaged the CIA as the scapegoat but it only deepened the mystery since it was the DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) of the Pentagon who had close relations with the Indonesian Army and not the English who never had the mechanism like the CIA or the DIA to trigger the coup coup.
