Intrusion: Parliament Suggests Strong Protest Against Interfet

Jakarta, Oct 11 (ANTARA)- Parliament members here Monday urges the
government to convey strong protests to the United Nations on the
Sunday's intrusion committed by the UN-mandated International
Force for East Timor (Interfet) to apolice border post in
Indonesian West Timor, which killed a police officer and wounded
four others.

They also called on the Indonesian Defence Force (TNI) not to
hesitate to open fire on any Interfet troops entering Indonesia's
territory, no matter what the reasons are nor in a bid to chace
pro-integration guerrilas.

"We stronghly protest the intrusion because it (the Interfet) has
violated its duty and authorization mandated by the United
Nations. Therefore, we urge the government to officially convey
protest to the UN and Interfet as well," Slamet Effendy Yusuf,
chairman of the Golkar party, told journalists on the sidelines of
the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR)'s general session.

Nothing that the sunday incident was not the first violation
committed by the Australian-led Interfet personnel, Yusuf said
that the force's soldiers made the intrusion on purpose, meaning
that they did not respect Indonesia's sovereignity by passing the
borderline.

"They cannot enter our border without permission even under the
reason that they were chasing miliamen. They must know that there
is a border, they cannot act just like that. Are we allowed to
chase any Australians in Melbourne"? Yusuf said.

Sharinga similiar opinion with Yusuf, chairwoman of the United
development Party (PPP), Aisyah Amidi, said that Interfet was
pretending to be naive by saying that they crossed the border
accidentally.

Amini said that Interfet, including Australian troops, are a
propessional military, and that there was no excuse for them to
say that the intrusion was only an accident.

"As professional military personnel, they must have known the
exact destination to run their heavy-armor operations. It is
impossible for them to say that they were not aware of the
location. It's very naive. They did it (intrusion) on purpose,"
she said.

Amini added that the Indonesian government should urge the United
Nations to pull-out the multinational force, especially the
Australian troops, from East Timor due to their weak
professionalism.

"There is nothing else to do expect pull them (Interfet) out from
East Timor," she said.

Chairman of Megawati-led Indonesian Democartic Party of Struggle
(PDI-P), Sabam Sirait, meanwhile, said that protest against the
Interfet Sunday raid was not enough.

He said that TNI should not hesitate to take actions against
foreign forces entering Indonesian territory illegally.

"It (what Interfet has done) is too much. If they cross the border
of Indonesian territory, just shoot them," he said.
