US MAY HAVE INTERVENED IN RI INTERNAL AFFAIRS

Yogyakarta, C. Java, 19 Jan (ANTARA) A Noted political observer
has said the United Stated may have intervened into Indonesia's
internal affairs but it would be difficult to be proven.

"Regarding its political and economic interests, Washington as
well as other foreign countries may have intervened into the
country's domestic affairs," Ichlasul Amal, rector of the
Yogyakarta-based Gadjah Mada University, told newsmen here
Wednesday.

He however said that it is difficult to detect such an
intervention.

On the statement of the U.S. Ambassador to the UN Richard
Holbrooke who spoke about the political situation in Indonesia
and called upon military leaders to abandon any plan they may
have to stage a coup d'etat aimed at toppling the government
headed by President Abdurrahman Wahid, Amal said, "It was
exaggerated."

"Indonesia is a big and open country, different from the African
countries. The Indonesian Military (TNI) will not to take
measures into their own hands and move against the government,"
Amal said.

He further said a coup d'etat is not a simple matter but need a
wide support as well as solid military force.

Amal has dismissed a coup d'etat possibility although he
indicated there were dissapointment and uneasiness among military
leaders afther the President replace several military figures
from their positions.

"TNI will not attempt to seize power though there is discontent
as a result of replacement in some military position. TNI chief
has reafiramed his stance on this issue," he said.

Similar opinion had also been aired by Amal's cellegue, Affan
Gafar who said that TNI will not seize the power from a
legitimate government.

"I don't think they will do so because as soldiers they have to
be loyal to the state and be ready to receive instruction from
the President, who according to the 1945 Constitution is the
supreme commander of the Army, Navy and Air Force," Gaffar said.

Several U.S. high-ranking officials have expressed concern about
the latest developments in Indonesia.

President Bill Clinton and other US officials expressed their
support for President Abdurrahman Wahid's administration.
