HOUSE SPEAKER REJECTS FOREIGN INVOLMENT IN HANDLING MALUKU
CONFLICTS

Jakarta, Jan 19 (ANTARA) - House Speaker Akbar Tanjung reiterated
that no foreign party would be allowed to be involved in handling
the Maluku conflicts, saying that it is purely an internal
affairs.

"No foreign party will be allowed to be involved. Indonesia is
handling it is as one of its internal conflicts," Tanjung told
the press Wednesday following a meeting with visiting Dutch
Foreign Minister Jozias van Aartsen.

The House Speaker also conveyed the "no foreign involment" policy
to a US parliamentary delegation, which met him earlier that day.

According to Tanjung, during the meeting, the Dutch Minister
rejected allegations that Maluku descent living in The
Netherlands supplied the weapons to Ambon.

"The information is misleading," Tanjung quoted Aarsten as
saying. RumoUrs said exponents of the so-called "South Maluku
Republic" (RMS) were involved in the sectarian conflicts in
Ambon.

Aarsten stressed that the RMS exponents were just encouraging
reconciliation, not sending firearms.

Last week (Wednesday, jan 12), a Dutch newspaper, Volkskrant,
reported that Maluku descents living in Netherlands have
collected funds to buy firearms to be sent to Maluku.
