UNRESTS WILL NOT HAMPER RI PRESIDENT TO LOBBY FOREIGN INVESTORS

Jakarta, Jan (ANTARA) - A series of unrests and sectarian
clashes wich erupted in some parts of Indonesia would not hamper
President Abdurrahman Wahid to lobby foreign investors to do
business in the country, a minister said.

even the widespread arson in a country has not been proven to
have hamper the flow of foreign investment into Indonesian

million is one "enjoying" the support of the international
community because it fells that the democratization process has
been taking place properly in the pluralistic archipelago.

"Almost all countries wish to assist Indonesia both politically,
economically and financially," he said.

The world community's support, he said would be an meaningful
means for the current government to resolve the existing
domestic problems, including those threatening the nation's
integrity.

Shihab again reiterated he government's confidence that the Aceh
question will be solved, saying that a way out would be reach
through a peaceful settlement under the spirit of national
unity.

Asked what the guarantee, the Indonesian gives to the investors
amid the threats of disintegration and ongoing clashes, like
those in the provinces of Aceh, Irian Jaya. Maluku and North
Maluku, he said the nation need not worry too much.

"Every nation has its problems. The most important thing is that
the government is seriously trying to solve them."

He said he feels confident that the world community believes in
the government's seriousness in dealing with the problems.

I another part of his press briefing, he touched on the
president's plan to make a 15-day tour of a number of European,
Asian and Middle Eastern countries.

The countries that the head of state will be visiting are Saudi
Arabia, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, France, Holland,
Germany, Italy (including Vatican), Czech Republic, Belgium,
India, South Korea and Thailand.

The president and an entourage are due to leave Jakarta on
Friday morning and return here on February 13.

During the visits, he head of state, according to Shihab, would
try to convince his counterparts and business circles that the
unrests in some parts of archipelago would not hamper them to
invest.

"We shall say that Indonesia is safe enough for investment," he
said, adding that the president would also state that there
would never be a military coup d'etat against the legitimate
government.

About his visit to Saudi Arabia, Shihab said that the country
has a strong influence in the oil rich states in the Middle East
and that they may be interested in investment in the riot-torn
Indonesia.

Meanwhile, his visit to Europe is aimed to convince the
countries that Jakarta still needs their investment.

The visit to India, according to Shihab, is necessary because
that the country has vowed to make an investment of US100 to
US200 million in Indonesia's middle scale industries.
