GUS DUR CALLED ON ALL NATIONAL COMPONENTS TO INCREASE UNITY

Yogyakarta, Jan 30 (ANTARA) - Presiden Abdurrahman Wahid called
on all national components to keep on enhancing their unity and
brotherhood as common human being, religious followers and
common citizens.

"We should not be easily deceived by unconfirmed news or
information," he said in his written address read out by Defense
Force Commander Admiral Widodo at the commemoration of the 50th
anniversary of death of Great General Soedirman, the founding
father of the Indonesian military here Saturday night.

Under the present freedom it was easy for one to manipulated
news, to make the wrong right and the right to be wrong," he
said.

The head of state also called on the people not to easily
underestimate and blame others because those who did that were
not always better. "respecting one another is something far
better to do," he added.

"So, let us develop our care for others as proof that we are
good religious followers," he said.

To achieve that he urged people to maintain unity, not to be
suspicious to each other, not to be easily incited or pitted
against each other and to care for others.

He said he believed by adhering to Soedirman's spirit and
personnel qualities all Indonesians, particularly TNI, could
achieve progress and remain a solid organisation.

Under current changes as shown not only in discourses and
paradigm of challenges and tests he admitted the challenged face
by TNI was not light, he said.

He said TNI would not only have to respond to criticisms made by
the people but more than that in had to face all the curses
addressed to it as probably a political revenge for the role it
played in the past.

"In this open era, what we actually need is a more civilised,
ethnical and moral way of lodging criticism and suggestion," he
said.
