TNI TRYING TO FIND BEST SOLUTION TO BORDER PROBLEMS

Denpasar, March 15 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian military (TNI) is
currently trying to seek a best formula for the settlement of
border problems following a series of incidents implicating pro-
integration and pro-independence groups, a senior military
officer has said.

And agreement is hopefully to be reached through negotiations
between the TNI and the United Nations Transitional
Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) for the solution to border
problems, Air Vice Marshal Graito Usodo, TNI spokesman, said
here on Tuesday.

Flanked by Bali Military Commander Maj Gen Kiki Syahnakri during
a stop-over at Ngurah Rai Airport when on his way to Atambua,
Graito pointed out that the Military Commander and UNTAET chief
Lt Gen S. de los Santos, will meet in negotiations for the best
solution.

The negotiations will constitute a significant momentum to show
that the TNI is consistent and serious to settle problems which
often emerge on the border of the two countries. In addition,
the occasion is also relevant to an agreement already signed by
the two sides (TNI and UNTAET), Graito said.

"We have to show them (international world and local
communities) that Indonesia including TNI continue trying to
find the best solution in the hope that similar problems could
be prevented from recurring in the future," he reiterated.

However, it does not mean that Indonesia would accept all kinds
of foreign criticism which tend to view Indonesia as
inconsistent in the handling of border problems. "Such
negotiations should not be interpreted that all the blames are
correct," he stressed.

Graito explained that actually such border problems are the
responsibility of both TNI and UNTAET, thus requiring joint
coordination and cooperation.
