The 20 ships left the naval base of the Indonesian eastern fleet in Surabaya, capital of East Java, for the eastern Indonesian waters on June 26, Commander of the Jayapura Naval Base Commodore Franklin W Kayjattu said on Sunday. The warships are the large ones, such as KRI Multa Tuli with a crew of 190, and the smaller ones such as fast patrol boats with a crew of 60 to 90. The patrol will cover eastern Indonesian waters, including Aru, Timika, Kaimana, Sorong, Bandara, and Seram. Many Thai-and Philippine-registered fishing vessels have been detained by the Indonesian Navy in these waters for illegally catching fish and shrimps. "The waters of Maluku and Irian Jaya which are rich in marine resources have always become a haven for poachers so that many ships are needed to patrol the waters," he said. Last month, a naval patrol boat, the KRI Singa, caught seven foreign fishing vessels, all flying the Philippine flag, in eastern Indonesian waters, commander of the warship Major Didin Zaenal Abidin said. The foreign vessels were spotted when Navy personnel were on rescue mission looking for people after boats had capsized in the Banda Sea and in waters off Southeast Sulawesi.
